Insomnia Relief
Sleep is one of the most essential thing that our body needs to be able to regenerate and repair itself. The amount of sleep that people usually need is between 6-8 hours of good quality sleep to function properly during the day without feeling tired or lacking energy.
Systemic conditions due to poor sleep
Poor quality of sleep has been linked to many diseases including hypertension, high blood pressure, cancer, stress, mental health, diabetes among other conditions.
Sleep is so important and essential for our wellbeing, unfortunately it can easily be affected by our negative emotions, daily stresses, worries, affected by physical pain, diseases, hormonal imbalances, jet lag, and night shift work.
Circadian rhythm and sleep
The circadian rhythm is related to biological processes that occur regularly at about 24 hours interval and is observed in animal and plants; and creates physiological and behavioural activities best suited for daytime or night time. For example rest, and cell repair ocurring at night time or being alert during the day. It is the internal clock that we have and make us fall asleep and wake up in the morning, when this internal clock is affected, sleep is impaired.
Circadian rhythms have effect on body temperature, sleep and wakefulness, and various hormonal changes. For example body temperature starts to rise during the last hour of sleep , this occurs just before waking up, this may promote a feeling of alertness in the morning. Body temperature decreases at night when the time for sleep draws near.
The pineal gland inside the brain is thought to produce melatonin and this hormone is believed to play a role in coordination of the circadian rhythm.
Things to do to help synchronize circadian rhythm
Need to have a regular schedule of going to bed at night, the darker the room for sleeping, the better for sleep to stimulate melatonin production, avoid electronic equipments including computers, cell phones, tabs, at least 2 hours before going to bed, and avoid full stomach before going to bed.
Sleep disorders or Insomnia can be complex issues to discuss, often it is multi factorial; clinically there are common factors present in clients that seek help for sleep and it is that their stress levels are high, there are always multiple musculoskeletal dysfunctions, cranial restrictions, and often emotional issues are present.
Good quality of sleep can be helped naturally with yoga, regular exercise, vitamins, reduce daily stress levels, and being surrounded by people with positive energy will help you to be more grounded.
